A 22-year-old man from Reading, Massachusetts, is facing a murder charge after his mother was found fatally shot in the family’s home early last week. Ryan Hanafin was taken into custody in Vermont the following afternoon and has agreed to return to Massachusetts to face the allegations, which also include multiple firearms offenses.
Andria Hanafin, 49, was discovered in the kitchen of the Center Avenue residence shortly after midnight on Thursday, October 8. Her husband, Matthew Hanafin, had returned from his shift at FedEx around 12:38 a.m. and called 911 after finding her with an apparent gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The couple’s 13-year-old son was home at the time but unharmed; he told investigators he had last seen his mother around 5 p.m. Wednesday, gone out with friends, and returned around 9 p.m. A daughter was away at college.
Ryan Hanafin, who lived in the home and was last seen by his father around 11 a.m. Wednesday, was missing along with his black 2010 Dodge Charger. Authorities identified him as a person of interest. Massachusetts police alerted Vermont State Police that he had known ties to the Warren area. Troopers located the vehicle on Route 100 near the Sugarbush Access Road around 2:30 p.m. Thursday and took him into custody without incident. His Massachusetts license to carry had been suspended that morning.
