BOSTON (SHNS) – With family shelter capacity capped and at record levels, the Healey administration plans Wednesday to open another overflow shelter for waitlisted families, this time converting a Roxbury recreation center to accommodate up to 100 families.

Emergency Assistance Director Scott Rice said the safety-net shelter site at the Cass Recreation Center will help serve more people who are eligible for shelter services under state law but currently on a waitlist, “especially those who have been sleeping at Logan Airport” where more newly arriving families have been sheltering.
The Cass Recreation Center will begin operating as a shelter on Wednesday and will stop that function by May 31 before it reopens as a recreation center and public pool, according to administration officials. Up to 400 individuals, or about 100 families, will be able to receive food, security, legal, medical and transportation services while the facility is in use as an overflow site.
