The once grand Hotel Alexandra in Boston is now an abandoned eyesore. No one seems to know what to do with this monument of Boston real estate, which was once a symbol of luxury but now decays before the city’s eyes.
The hotel was built by the Walworth brothers of Massachusetts in the developing South End of Boston. When it opened in 1875, it stood out amongst the warehouses in the area with its 50 rooms and large flats featuring high, elegant ceilings.
Hope Shannon from the South End Historical Society said: “I think, Alexandra was a princess related to or slated to marry someone from the English royal family. She might’ve been from Denmark. The rumor is they named the hotel Alexandra after her. The Alexandra was built around the same time she was alive.”

But like famous figures from history, buildings too can fall victim to time. A simple power wash could reveal the beauty hidden beneath years of dirt and neglect. Those who saw the Alexandra in her heyday would say she was truly something to behold.
