State lawmakers pause agenda to commemorate 9/11

BOSTON (WWLP) – 23 years after the 9/11 attacks, Governor Maura Healey, Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll, and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu gathered on the State House Steps to read all 2,977 names of the terrorist attack victims.

This outdoor ceremony was followed by a ceremony in the House Chambers, which included a poem reading and two musical performances by a Massachusetts choir.

Governor Healey addressed the audience, and remarked on the lessons we can learn from first responders and civilian heroes who lost their lives on 9/11. “They taught us that good wins out when we rely on our bonds with one another. The strength of our community gets us through even the worst of times,” said Healey.

During the House Chamber ceremonies, a western Massachusetts woman was awarded a coveted civilian award for bravery for saving her elderly neighbors from a house fire in Wales. The award is presented in honor of Madeline Amy Sweeney, a Massachusetts flight attendant who relayed crucial information before her plane crashed into the Twin Towers.
