Top Red Sox free agent target predicted to re-sign with 2024 club this offseason

As the Boston Red Sox prepare for their 2025 season, they have some big needs to address throughout the offseason either through trade or free agency.

One name that’s been constantly brought up as a free agent target for Boston this year is Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman.

While the Red Sox have Rafael Devers manning third base, there have been conversations about moving him to either first base or designated hitter at some point in his career. Adding Bregman at third base could give them the experienced right-handed bat that they desperately need, but they’d also need to move on from either Triston Casas or Masataka Yoshida.

The talk of Bregman to Boston may be all for nothing, as The Athletic’s Jim Bowden predicted that the two-time World Series champion remains with the Astros on a seven-year deal worth $185.5 million.

Red Sox owner John Henry could certainly afford to match that contract, but for a player that’s seemed to dip in production over the last two seasons, they may be better off spending money on other players or positions.
