BROCKTON — McDonald’s plans to build a new restaurant at the corner of Belmont and West streets.
The burger chain would close the existing location blocks away, across from Brockton High School, once the new location opens, according to Christine E. Dieter, a lawyer for the company.
The 3,700-square foot McDonald’s would have a two-lane drive-through, said project engineer Eric Dubrule, who said he has designed hundreds of restaurants for the company. This increasingly common layout allows for faster service, he said.
Local officials approved two exceptions to zoning rules on Wednesday that pave the way for the project. The new restaurant must also pass the city’s planning board.
New location is farther from Brockton High
“I think this is a good project for the area,” said Brockton Fire Chief Brian Nardelli, who sits on the Zoning Board of Appeals. “It will help with some of the antics that go on.” He’s referencing chaos sometimes caused by Brockton High students at the current location. A new Starbucks across from the high school recently closed its dining room during school afternoons because of the disruptions.
