Fire at South Shore auto body shop closes portion of Route 3A

A Hingham auto body shop is open one day after a fire.

Firefighters put out a two-alarm building fire at Ernie’s Auto Body at 344 Lincoln St. in Hingham that began around 3 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.

The business was open as of Wednesday morning. An employee who answered the phone there shortly before 9 a.m. deferred question to the shop’s owner, who was not immediately available.

An engine from the Weymouth Fire Department was also called to the fire around 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 17 to assist with any firefighter-related injuries or searches, none of which were reported, according to the Norfolk County Control fire dispatch coordination service in Holbrook.

Video from WCVB’s Sky5 shows firefighters on the roof of the building, spraying their firehose at flames at the corner of the roof, with a Hingham Fire Department ladder truck and two tanker trucks surrounding the building.

In response to the fire, Hingham police closed Route 3A (Lincoln Street) at Sergeant William B. Terry Drive and Fottler Road around 3:30 p.m. The roadway fully reopened in both directions a little over two hours later, according to posts on the department’s X account .
