Boston to Celebrate Juneteenth with Events Honoring Black Freedom and Resilience, Mayor Wu Encourages Community Participation

Boston’s Mayor Michelle Wu, together with the City’s Equity and Inclusion Cabinet, is inviting residents and visitors to take part in a series of events commemorating Juneteenth, from today to Saturday. These happenings are set to honor the emancipation of enslaved African Americans as well as the current excellence and resilience of the Black community within Boston. “I encourage every resident and family to attend an event this week to reflect, honor and be in community as we continue our work to make Boston a home for everyone,” Mayor Wu stated, according to the City of Boston press release.

Following this, the Strand Theatre in Dorchester will be hosting the Echoes of Freedom concert featuring Howard University Gospel Choir. This concert promises to actively engage and uplift through gospel music, deeply intertwined with the Black experience. Online registration for the concert is advised and can be done via the official event link.

A Community Celebration at Franklin Park is also on the slate, slated to bring together a day of music, food, dance, and various activities for families and individuals alike. Mariangely Solis Cervera, Chief of Equity and Inclusion, emphasized the importance of the events, noting, “We are a city shaped by Black brilliance — from our role in the abolitionist movement to the everyday acts of resilience and joy that define our communities.
