Man convicted of fatal shooting at Mattapan ice cream parlor in 1990 gets parole

A man who was 19 when he killed a fellow teenager outside a Boston ice cream parlor in 1990 was granted parole Tuesday in a unanimous decision.

Evens Auguste was convicted of first-degree murder for killing 19-year-old Dana Cox in Mattapan. Initially, Auguste was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, but he became eligible for release under a Supreme Judicial Court decision published last year. He appeared before the board in February.

On Oct. 16, 1990, two witnesses told police they saw Auguste using a phone inside L&A Market just before the shooting. Auguste was seen crossing the street and approaching an ice cream parlor, where Cox was standing outside. A vehicle pulled up to the ice cream parlor and Cox began speaking to the driver, at which point Auguste approached him. Auguste said something to Cox, then shot him six times, the board wrote in its decision…
