A Nigerian national has pleaded guilty to orchestrating a sophisticated romance scam that swindled six victims out of over $2.5 million, with a significant portion funneled through an unsuspecting Massachusetts resident.

The perpetrator, Charles Uchenna Nwadavid, 35, of Abuja, Nigeria, entered his plea yesterday in Boston federal court, admitting to charges of mail fraud, aiding and abetting money laundering, and money laundering.

Nwadavid’s scheme involved creating fictitious online profiles to build trust with victims through fabricated romantic relationships. Once he had their confidence, he would invent urgent scenarios – such as needing funds for a multi-million dollar inheritance or unexpected medical emergencies – to induce them to send money abroad…
