Boston to levy fines against Republic Services as trash strike drags on

The City of Boston will start issuing code enforcement fines directly to Republic Services for garbage left uncollected amid the ongoing trash collection worker strike, Mayor Michelle Wu said in a letter on Wednesday.

The city of Boston does not directly contract with Republic, but businesses with private contracts are being impacted by the strike, which started on July 1. Wu wrote that the city has received complaints about overflowing dumpsters and businesses struggling as they pay for trash pickup under service contracts that are not being adequately fulfilled.

The city did not issue code enforcement fines from July 1 to July 6, but has been issuing them since July 7. Wu said she expected Republic to absorb any fines related to their trash pickup services. Further, she said the city will start issuing those fines directly to Republic, instead of the impacted businesses, for any trash left uncollected starting Wednesday…
