U.S. mail theft investigator stole over $330K from packages, feds say

A U.S. postal inspector, once the head of Boston’s Mail Theft Unit, stole more than $330,000 in cash from packages and used it to upgrade his house, cover costs on cruises and pay for sex, federal prosecutors said.

Scott Kelley, of Pembroke, Massachusetts, faces a slew of charges brought by a grand jury over stolen and laundered money, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Massachusetts said Friday. Along with allegedly stealing cash from nearly 2,000 packages, the former inspector is also accused of stealing $7,000 from an evidence locker and then blaming one of his direct reports.

The 51-year-old was due in federal court Friday. It wasn’t immediately clear if Kelley had an attorney who could speak to the charges…
