Catty mayoral race heats up with 50 candidates — and none are human

(NewsNation) — An intense mayoral race in Somerville, Massachusetts, has the candidates pulling their claws out.

The city is searching for its next bike path mayor for the Somerville Community Path, a paved trail, and the candidates aren’t people.

So far, the frontrunner seeking to fill the imaginary office is Berry, a black-and-white tuxedo cat whose slogan is, “Make Cats Outside Again.” He’s the “unofficial incumbent,” designated by his owner, Mallory Bissett, who launched the race by putting up campaign signs of her cat in good fun.

Since July, the race has grown from two candidates — Berry and Orange Cat — to include Freya, a feline of the Com-meow-nist Party, Nagi the turtle, Timber the parrot, Ms. Potato the Guinea and Large Snake the (you guessed it) snake, totaling 50 creatures vying for political office…
