Fake Cop Scams Boston Resident Out of Cash — Police Warn of New Phone Scheme

Boston cops are warning residents about a slick phone scam after a Dorchester victim was conned out of cash by someone posing as a police sergeant.

According to investigators, the victim got a call on Tuesday, September 30, from (617) 634-5528, with the caller claiming to be a Boston Police sergeant. The scammer told the victim they owed money for a court-related matter and needed to make payments through Zelle to several phone numbers he provided. The victim ended up sending two payments before realizing it was a scam.

Police are reminding the public that the Boston Police Department will never call and demand money, banking info, or electronic transfers as part of any investigation or legal issue…
