Boston City Council Celebrates Turkish Republic Day, Commemorates 102 Years of Turkish Independence

Boston’s Turkish community just got a significant nod from the city council. In a recent meeting, the council unanimously voted to honor the 102nd anniversary of the Republic of Türkiye and the Turkish citizens who’ve brought their vibrant culture to the Boston area. According to a press release from the City of Boston website, the council declared October 29, as Turkish Republic Day to recognize the establishment of the Republic in 1923 by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

This year also marks the 30th Annual Boston Turkish Arts & Culture Festival, a landmark event showcasing intercultural exchange and the intricacies of Turkish heritage. The council commends the Turkish American Cultural Society of New England for their role in enriching the city’s social, economic, and cultural tapestry, having been playing a vital role at promoting Turkish culture and fostering understanding for these past 30 years.

City Hall Plaza is set to wear the colors of the Turkish flag come October 29th, in a flag-raising ceremony that symbolizes the strong bonds between Boston and the Turkish community.
