Hundreds gathered in Copley Square last Saturday for Boston’s annual Veterans Day celebration, but as they prepared to march to City Hall Plaza, some couldn’t help but notice what the parade was lacking.
“One thing that’s missing from the parade this year is the active duty component,” Rob Santiago, commissioner of Boston’s veterans services department, told The Beacon.
According to Santiago, this is because of the government shutdown, which has become the longest in United States history, lasting 41 days. Democrats were holding out to secure key provisions on healthcare, but on Monday, eight senate democrats joined with Republicans to vote to open the government without gaining those provisions.
