Boston Family Files $30M Wrongful Death Suit Over Teen’s Fatal Crash During Police Chase

A $30 million wrongful death lawsuit has been filed by the family of one of the three teenagers killed in a crash during a 2024 police pursuit in Dorchester, Boston. The suit alleges that Boston police officers’ failure to obey orders to cease the chase directly led to the fatal incident. According to WCVB, the deceased included 15-year-old Troy Winslow. His parents, Jessica Adams and Tony Lee Winslow, initiated legal action in Suffolk Superior Court against officers Triston Champagnie, Matthew Farley, and Chardeeza Coleman, along with the Boston Police Department, City of Boston, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Information detailed by The Boston Globe indicates that the officers involved were in violation of state law and department rules when they engaged in pursuit of the silver Hyundai, believed to be stolen and carrying the teens. The lawsuit suggests that the initial stop was not legally justified, and escalation of the chase occurred despite a direct order to terminate it. Racial profiling is also alleged as a factor, given that the victims in the car were either Black or Latino.

An investigation by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office described the pursuit as reaching speeds exceeding 90 miles per hour based on video evidence, despite orders from superiors to end the pursuit. However, the officers reportedly lied about ceasing their chase, even as the Hyundai rolled on Morrissey Boulevard, culminating in the tragic loss of life.
