Feds charge convenience store owners with trafficking nearly $7M in SNAP benefits

Federal authorities say they have charged two Boston convenience store owners with trafficking nearly $7 million in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

“This is taxpayer money meant to keep people from going hungry,” U.S. Attorney Leah Foley said at a press conference announcing the charges Wednesday. “These defendants decided to take it for themselves.”

Foley said this was not a sophisticated fraud scheme, and it didn’t have to be, because of the lack of oversight for the SNAP program. And she said these arrests are just the beginning, and the Trump administration will continue to search for additional examples of fraud…
