Massachusetts Senate targets property tax relief for homeowners

BOSTON (WWLP) – Monday is the deadline for Massachusetts residents to submit written testimony on two Senate property tax proposals that could lower bills for some taxpayers.

Often, controversial bills like these–which saw a surge of interest due to Boston’s high property tax levels–would have an in-person hearing, but taxpayers can only weigh in in writing in this case.

One of the bills seeks to prevent so-called “tax shocks,” when residential property taxes increase by more than 10% in the third quarter of the fiscal year. This policy would allow towns to opt in to giving some help to residents.

Some groups would receive a temporary tax reduction: households where the owner is a senior, MassHealth recipient, unemployed, or in a high-need neighborhood could be deemed eligible…
