Massachusetts animal shelter investigates circumstances of dog’s tragic death

BOSTON (WWLP) – Dolly, a dog who was recently taken in by Angell Medical Center in Boston, had to be humanely euthanized after being found wounded and emaciated.

MSPCA-Angell stated that the roughly two-year-old dog, whom they called Dolly, was brought in on January 10th by an individual who reportedly found her outside in Lexington. Veterinarians discovered through early examinations that Dolly had wounds on her feet and tail and was nearly starved to death.

“When this dog came in, she was unbelievably thin and too weak to stand up,” said Mike Keiley, vice president of the MSPCA-Angell’s Animal Protection Division. “On the scale we use to measure a dog’s body weight, she had the lowest possible score—meaning she was as emaciated as she could be before passing.”

Keiley said that the young dog had a seizure shortly after arriving in Boston, believed to be caused by hypoglycemia. She also required a blood transfusion due to a gastrointestinal bleed of unknown origin and may need surgical treatment.

Due to a medical emergency that left her oxygen dependent, medical staff made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize her. MSPCA-Angell said Dolly crossed the rainbow bridge on January 16th, surrounded by people who cared deeply for her and showered her with love, ice cream, and peanut butter…
