In a news release from the Department of Justice, 68-year-old Debora A. Siler fraudulently obtained approximately $62,885 in Social Security benefits over a period of more than five years, from June 2015 through September 2020.

According to the charging documents, Siler had access to the checkbook and debit card of a Social Security beneficiary who passed away in May 2015. Instead of notifying the Social Security Administration or the bank of the beneficiary’s death, Siler forged the deceased’s name on checks and used the debit card to deplete the account.

Siler pleaded guilty bank fraud and was sentenced to time served (approximately one day in prison) and three years of supervised release. She was also ordered to pay $62,885 in restitution.
