Left rotting in limbo after a failed vote to fund its replacement, Westwood’s Fire Station 1 closed abruptly last week as heavy snowfall escalated structural concerns.

Firefighters noticed increased water damage on the apparatus bay floor after last week’s blizzard swept through New England, the town explained in a Thursday press release. A structural engineer brought in for an emergency evaluation found that two of the station’s bays were structurally unsound for housing the ladder, engine, or other large fire vehicles — at least, until critical repairs could be completed…
