Brockton man gets 12 years for fentanyl sales after feds seize machine guns, drugs

BOSTON (WWLP) – A Brockton man has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison after admitting to selling fentanyl during multiple controlled drug purchases while already on probation and facing another pending drug charge.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, 29-year-old Joshua Tavares was sentenced Tuesday in federal court to 12 years in prison followed by five years of supervised release.

Tavares pleaded guilty in May 2025 to three counts of distribution and possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and a fentanyl analogue. Prosecutors said Tavares, who was identified as a member of the Brockton-based Harvard Street gang, conducted six drug sales to a cooperating witness between September and November 2024. During those transactions, investigators said Tavares sold approximately 249 grams of a fentanyl analogue. Authorities said all of the sales were captured on video.

At the time of the transactions, Tavares was on probation for a 2019 fentanyl conviction and was also on pretrial release for a separate drug arrest in March 2024.

Following the controlled purchases, law enforcement executed arrest and search warrants on Dec. 3, 2024, at several residences and stash houses in Brockton. Investigators recovered about four kilograms of suspected fentanyl, cocaine, drug packaging materials, and more than $89,000 in cash…
