Two arrested after alleged assault on Springfield officer during traffic stop

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Two people were arrested in Springfield on Tuesday after a traffic stop on Union Street led to an alleged assault on an officer, and the recovery of large quantities of drugs and cash.

The Springfield Police Department states that at around 8 p.m., officers were patrolling the area of Union Street and performed a traffic stop on the 500 block of Union Street. The driver and the passenger, 21-year-old Roberto Gueits-Delgado of Springfield and 32-year-old Jhonatan Figueroa of Lynn began to walk away from their vehicle while ignoring the officer’s commands.

As officers were attempting to detain Gueits-Delgado, he broke free and grabbed a fanny pack out of the car. During a struggle, Gueits-Delgado punched the officer in the face, and the officer utilized OC spray, causing the fanny pack to fall on the ground.

Figueroa picked up the fanny pack and began to run from the officers. Figueroa was located near the intersection of Union and Stebbins Street. Approximately 29 grams of crack-cocaine, one bag of cocaine, two bags of marijuana, and approximately 216 baggies of heroin were located inside the pack. Over $1,400 in cash was also found on Gueits-Delgado.
