Lawsuit targets permit for PRPA Rawhide turbines

A key part of Platte River Power Authority’s move away from coal is now being challenged in Larimer County District Court.

Earlier this month, Fred Kirsch of Fort Collins and Ethan Augreen of Longmont filed suit alleging that the Colorado Air Pollution Control Division misapplied federal environmental rules when it issued a construction permit in April for five new natural gas combustion turbines that will eventually replace the coal-fired generator at the Rawhide Energy Station in Wellington.

“This lawsuit does not seek to halt lawful energy development or prevent PRPA from transitioning away from coal,” the petitioners stated in a media release. “However, the Clean Air Act has rules for major industrial transitions, and those rules still apply during coal-to-gas conversion projects.”…
