Locals call the steep west-side climb Boulder’s outdoor StairMaster. Visitors remember the picture: pink-red boulders, a rugged summit marker, and the city spread out below. That scene is Mount Sanitas—pronounced SAN-i-tuhs—and it begins only minutes from downtown Boulder.
The summit reaches approximately 6,863 feet, about 1,300 feet above the city. According to the City of Boulder’s official trail information, the Mount Sanitas Trail runs 1.3 miles and gains 1,323 feet. Connecting it with East Ridge and Sanitas Valley creates a roughly 3.1- to 3.4-mile loop, depending on the chosen connectors.
Most hikers need between 1.5 and 2.5 hours. The trail is short, but the rocky footing, steep steps and deceptive false summits make every mile count.
A Name Built Around Health
Sanitas is Latin for “health,” and the mountain’s name comes from Boulder’s early wellness culture…
