About 150 years after it was founded, the small community of Niwot could become the state’s 274th municipality.
Residents in November will vote on whether to incorporate their community to create a new town or city government, as well as if Niwot should write its own rules as a home rule city or follow state rules as a statutory town. They’ll also have to decide if they want to approve tax increases to fund that new government and cover the cost for repairs to deteriorating roads, with five tax questions in all.
Finally, they’ll have the opportunity to elect a nine-member charter commission — from a slate of 28 candidates — to write the rules if both the incorporation and home rules measures are approved…
