After Kelley Dean was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021, she found Medicine Horse.
The Boulder County nonprofit offers a free six-week program for current and former breast cancer patients. As someone who has always loved horses, Dean was initially intrigued by the equine focus of the support group but wasn’t sold on the therapy element, she recalled. After experiencing the program, her attitude shifted.
“What’s unexpected is the peace and calm you get at Medicine Horse during the chaos of cancer,” Dean said.
Now, Dean is a board member for Medicine Horse, which sits at 7663 East County Line Road south of Longmont. Dean also runs the nonprofit’s Garden Club, a volunteer group that typically meets every two weeks to cultivate the ranch’s community garden.
