Denver will pay people to ride their bikes instead of driving

DENVER ( KDVR ) — Soon, you could be eligible to ride your bike for compensation.

Denver Streets Partnership’s new program, known as the Bicycling Rewards Program, will pay people to ride their bikes instead of driving to their destinations as a way to reach Colorado’s climate goals.

The reason Colorado is struggling to meet its climate goals is because there are too many people driving vehicles, according to the program. In Denver, transportation was responsible for 30% of greenhouse gas emissions in 2018 .

The goal of the program is to incentivize riding a bicycle more often than driving for people who could benefit the most from compensation.

How the program will work

There are three different ways you can potentially participate.

Model 1: Mileage reimbursement

Participants will be paid $1 per mile for all transportation-related trips (not for recreation). People can make up to $200 per month (capped at 85 participants).

Model 2: Wrap-around support
