Lawmakers embrace the wild side with Zoo Day at the Colorado Capitol

DENVER (KDVR) — It’s not every day that people can walk into the Colorado Capitol and see wild animals everywhere, but that was the case Friday morning.

The second floor of the Colorado Capitol became a zoo for a few hours for the Denver Zoo’s annual Zoo Day at the Capitol. The event has been going on for many years, and Denver Zoo President and CEO Bert Vescolani said it gets more popular every year.

“To be honest, I think the adults love it as much as the kids do, and I will tell you we love it,” Vescolani said. “It’s a really special day for us.”

Several exhibit stations were set up and animal handlers were there to inform visitors about the animals and help visitors touch the animals.

This year’s special guest was Wookiee, a Linne’s two-toed sloth. Vescolani said he doesn’t know why, but people seem to be really interested in the sloth. The zoo also showcased reptiles, wild birds and insects.
