1-minute voter guide: Democratic primary for CU Regent

The lone statewide race in the primary election is a contest for the Democratic nomination for the University of Colorado’s governing board.

Why it matters: The nine CU Regents oversee the university system and its $340 million budget, set tuition at member campuses and hire its president.

  • The board also is a stepping stone for higher office in Colorado.

State of play: Elliott Hood faces Charles “CJ” Johnson in the race. Both are CU Boulder graduates and both are endorsed by members of the current board, CPR reports .

  • Hood is leading the money race with $152,000 in contributions compared to $109,000 for Johnson, financial disclosures show.

Zoom in: Hood is a former 5th grade educator through Teach for America and attorney who advocates for public school districts as a member of the law firm Caplan and Earnest . He lives in Boulder and lists his top priority as making CU more affordable.

  • He also supports a ban on concealed weapons on campuses and wants to push the university to become carbon neutral.
