Boulder County Courthouse recognized for role in LGBTQ+ rights

The Boulder County Courthouse has been designated a National Historic Landmark for its role in advancing LGBTQ+ rights in the United States, according to a press release. Clela Rorex, the Boulder County clerk in 1975, issued the first same-sex marriage license in the nation at the courthouse, 1325 Pearl St., Boulder She consulted with the assistant district attorney at the time to confirm there were no Colorado laws prohibiting marriage between individuals of the same sex, according to the release. Rorex issued the license, stating years later that, “after having been so deeply involved in the women’s rights movements, who was I to then deny a right to anyone else? It wasn’t my job to legislate morality.”
