Man rescued after crashing into Clear Creek canyon wall after dark while BASE jumping

NEAR GOLDEN, Colo. (KDVR) — A BASE jumper was seriously hurt Sunday evening after he crashed with his parachute near Clear Creek along U.S. Highway 6.

The man was injured around 6 p.m., which was after dark, according to first responders. U.S. 6 had to be shut down for hours as the rescue took place.

“It was a nighttime. It was already dark so that always adds an element of complexity to the incident,” Golden Fire Department Deputy Chief of Operations Sean Jones said.

Crews from the Golden Fire Department, Foothills Fire and Rescue and Arvada Fire placed a ladder on ice to cross Clear Creek, parts of which were frozen, to reach the man in trouble.

High lines, ropes and cables were set out so a rescue basket could be used to hoist the man to safety 60 to 80 feet up the canyon wall. Dramatic photos of the operation detailed technical procedures used by the first responders to save the injured BASE jumper.
