Boulder is gearing up to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a series of events funded by the city’s Human Relations Fund and supported by the Office of Arts and Culture. These events, free and open to the public, aim to honor the civil rights leader’s legacy and resonate with the Boulder community. Throughout January 19 and 20, a handful of gatherings are set to take place around the city, offering a rich mix of performance and reflection.
On Sunday, January 19, from 12 to 5 p.m., MI Chantli, located at 1750 30th St. Unit 22, is hosting “Freed by the Hum of the Drum.” According to the City of Boulder, festivities center around Hip Hop, from dance to spoken word, culminating with a set by DJ Meku. The space will come alive with spoken word and poetry, in addition to a live community mural that carries the spirit of Dr. King’s endurance.
The same day, the Boulder Jewish Community Center at 6007 Oreg Avenue will host an event titled “30 Years: Dream Makers, Mile Markers, & Milestones What’s Your Dream?” from 3 to 5 p.m. The celebration, organized by the Second Baptist Church of Boulder, features keynote speaker Sheyann Webb and a series of local performances inspired by MLK’s vision of an egalitarian society. “What’s Your Dream?” is more than an evocation of Dr. King’s iconic speech, it is a call to action, a beacon to those still navigating the path to civil rights and recognition.
