‘Don’t terrorize your neighbors’: Commerce City police accuse man of shooting neighbor in the head

DENVER (KDVR) — The Commerce City Police Department has an important message for residents: Don’t shoot your neighbors, especially in the head, even if it’s with an air rifle.

On Tuesday at about 6:30 p.m., the Commerce City Police Department warned residents near 66th Avenue and Monaco Street of police activity, and reported at about 8:47 p.m. that they had arrested the suspect, and it was safe in the area again.

On Wednesday, the agency shared what led to that police activity: A suspect allegedly used a high-powered air rifle to shoot his neighbor, unprovoked, in the back of the neighbor’s head, causing serious injury. Police said the neighbor is “frankly lucky to be alive.”

The incident spurred a several-hour-long standoff with the suspect, who did not comply with officers’ commands. Ultimately, the agency arrested the suspect and recovered what officers called “two very realistic looking pellet guns,” which the agency said could be used to kill.

The suspect was previously charged with second-degree assault with a deadly weapon for a different crime. This time, he’s facing first-degree assault with a deadly weapon charges, as well as five counts of second-degree assault on a peace officer after deploying bear spray during the arrest…
