Chihuahua races take center stage at 36th annual Cinco de Mayo Festival

Hours before the Kentucky Derby would capture the attention of people across the country for two minutes late Saturday afternoon, a different set of races grabbed the focus of people at Denver’s Civic Center Park.

One of the events headlining the 36th annual Cinco de Mayo Festival and Parade, the chihuahua race drew hundreds of attendees to a 25-foot-long racetrack made out of PVC pipes at noon. There, they would watch as 59 chihuahuas competed against one another in a test of speed, determination and focus.

“What you are about to see is one of the most amazing things in all the world,” said Senen ‘Slim’ Rodriguez, who works for Denver radio stations Star 101.5 and Flow 107.1 and was the emcee for the event. “The fastest little ankle biters you’ve ever seen are about to take this course over.”…
