DENVER (KDVR) — The Regional Transportation District is cracking down on riders who jump on trains without purchasing a ticket.
RTD told FOX31 that fare checks conducted by security officers have increased 500% from this time last year after a review showed many riders were not buying tickets before entering commuter and light rail trains. One sweep revealed 6% of riders did not have tickets.

RTD Police Chief Steve Martingano told FOX31 that a careful review led to a four-step security plan initiated in August that increased fare checks to protect riders and RTD employees, who had also made complaints about riders not paying fares.
“It’s like anything else, right? If you go to a movie theater, you want somebody to rip your tickets or a sporting event; otherwise, why pay for it? So our customers are really feeling a sense that what they’re paying for everyone else is paying for the same services,” he said…
