Boulder County Man Pleads Guilty, Faces 25-32 Years for Assault of At-Risk Man Using Tree Branch

Derek Jordan pleaded guilty on September 18 to first degree assault of an at risk person, which is a class two felony, after striking Marius Suffian with a tree branch in an incident that occurred on September 23, 2023 in Boulder County. Jordan is in custody and awaiting his sentencing hearing scheduled for November 3 at 9 a.m. He faces 25 to 32 years in prison for the attack.

On the day of the incident, Suffian was walking home from work when Jordan hit him with a broken tree branch more than a dozen times. This included multiple hits to the face while Suffian was on the ground. Boulder police responded quickly and found the defendant restrained by a bystander who witnessed the attack. Suffian sustained a nasal fracture, a complex facial laceration with a laceration to his tear duct, and other serious bodily and facial injuries.

Suffian is an at-risk adult, which is defined as “persons aged 18 and older who are unable to provide or obtain services necessary for their health, safety, and welfare or who lack the capacity to make or understand responsible decisions.”…
