CPW offers a number of tips on what to do in the event of a bear encounter, including how to avoid attacks at home, how to protect pets and what to do if a person and a bear cross paths.

How to avoid attracting bears to your home, according to CPW:

  • Never leave trash or recyclables out overnight
  • Avoid placing meat or fruit scraps onto mulch or compost piles, if composting
  • Remove birdfeeders from April to November, when bears are most active

What to do if you cross paths with a bear, according to CPW:

  • Never approach bears or offer food
  • Stand still, say calm and let the bear identify you and leave
  • Talk in a normal tone of voice
  • Never run or climb a tree
  • Be sure the bear has an opening to leave the area
  • Wave your arms slowly overhead and talk calmly, if the bear doesn’t leave
  • Maintain eye contact and slowly back away until the bear is out of sight

How to protect pets from bears, according to CPW:

  • Keep dogs leashed
  • Always supervise pets when outside at home, especially at dawn or dusk
  • Secure a pet in a fully enclosed kennel, if it must be kept outside
  • Don’t feed pets outside or leave pet food outside
