As temperatures drop each fall, typically around early October, the thermal layers at Standley Lake begin the turnover process, which forces cooling water at the surface to sink and mix with layers toward the bottom. This process is normal for many lakes and reservoirs.
The turnover process helps supply the lake’s ecosystem with vital nutrients and oxygen, the city said, and may cause an earthy smell or taste in the city’s drinking water. The process typically lasts from two to four weeks, depending on how warm the air is.
Westminster said that water quality specialists monitor the drinking water supply at the treatment facility 24/7 and assured that the water from taps at home is safe to drink.
