State archeologist concludes Lafayette Cemetery has overlapping gravesites, unmarked remains; city pauses coffin burials

The Lafayette Cemetery will pause coffin burials indefinitely, the city has announced, following the discovery of what staff believed to be evidence of human remains during a recent burial that led to involvement by the Office of the State Archeologist of Colorado, according to city staff. Cremains burials will still be allowed.

A letter from City Clerk Lynnette Beck dated Nov. 13 and addressed to owners of burial plots at the cemetery said the city has determined that over time, “many of the gravesites in the Lafayette Cemetery were inaccurately plotted, resulting in potential overlapping plots and irregular plot sizes, rendering them unusable.”
