Boulder hiker known as the ‘Hat Man’ spreads kindness, one free hat at a time

BOULDER, Colo. — On the trails of Boulder’s Mount Sanitas, Curtis Jones has become a local legend.

Most people don’t know his name or what he looks like. But anyone who has hiked up the mountain just outside of town recently has surely seen his hats.

Jones, who some call “the mayor of Mount Sanitas,” has built a reputation around Boulder by handing out free hats to people he encounters on the popular hiking trail. He has no sponsors, no agenda, and expects nothing in return. He simply does it to be nice and hopes that people will in turn be nice to others, as well…
