CU Boulder Installs Locking Devices To Protect Students, Faculty, Staff From Imminent Threats

The Division of Public Safety (DPS) at CU Boulder has installed security enhancements to three classrooms as part of a larger security system upgrade that will eventually add locking devices to 39 large classrooms and auditoriums in 23 buildings. The upgrades will allow instructors to instantly lock the classroom with the push of a button in case of an imminent threat.

Pushing the button will contact dispatch and lock the room until an officer arrives. Nobody will be able to enter the classroom except for a police officer. When the locking mechanism is initiated, it is still possible for people to exit the classroom.

$3.4 million in funding from the US Department of Justice (DOJ) CRI-TAC program controlled by the state of Colorado is being used to fund the security upgrades. The university expects to complete the installation of the new locking devices in 17 classrooms across 10 buildings over the spring and summer of 2026…
