Berthoud’s John-of-all-trades: soldier, homesteader and mayor

John Calvin Shull was a Civil War veteran whose impact on the Berthoud community was far-ranging.

He homesteaded in the rural district, established one of the town’s first livery stables, operated the Grand View Hotel and built the Moon Theatre. At different times, he was postmaster, mayor and justice of the peace.
