Bradenton voters to decide mayor’s council role, term limits

BRADENTON, Fla. — Bradenton voters will decide in November whether to approve two proposed city charter amendments that could change the mayor’s role in city government and set term limits for elected city leaders.

One proposal would explicitly state that the mayor is not a member of the City Council and would prohibit the mayor from casting a tie-breaking vote. The second would limit the mayor and City Council members to three four-year terms.

Mayor Gene Brown, who was elected in 2020, said the proposed change to the mayor’s role is partly about improving communication with council members. Brown said that under Florida’s Sunshine Laws, he can only talk to council members about certain city business during a public meeting…
