Bradenton man stuck in red tape after mortgage company paid property taxes in error

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Kevin FitzGerald was stunned last November when he learned a company he had never heard of paid his property taxes for no reason.

He knew it must be a mistake and says he left numerous messages for the company but no one called him back.

FitzGerald paid cash for the condo and doesn’t have a mortgage, so he is the one who pays the property taxes, not a mortgage company.

“I was thinking that was a happy day, you know, nice to have that paid,” he said. “But I knew eventually, it’s not yours and it will come back and somebody would be wanting it.”

Consumer Investigator Shannon Behnken reached out to both companies and received the following statement from Valon:

“It’s understandable that Mr. FitzGerald was confused to hear from us; he was unfortunately impacted by a data error as a part of a servicing transfer that led to a tax payment on the wrong unit number. These kinds of errors are extremely rare, and we are working with Mr. FitzGerald to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. The important thing is that no homeowner has been or will be adversely impacted as a result of this situation.” -Valon spokesperson
