Workshop set on Venice airport admin building

VENICE — The Venice Municipal Airport’s long-planned new administration/terminal building is the subject of a virtual neighborhood workshop set for 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9.

The purpose of the workshop is to provide information about the construction project, “to receive comments and to respond to questions,” a city news release says.

For years, the plan has been to replace the existing building at 150 Airport Ave. E. with a larger one nearby.

It’s being referred to as a terminal not because of any plane for airline flights but because “it’s where GA (general aviation) flights terminate,” Airport Director Mark Cervasio has said.

Airline flights aren’t in the city’s future for a variety of reasons, he has said, including the airport’s inability to provide the level of security the Federal Aviation Administration would demand and a lack of passenger demand, with Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport to the north and Punta Gorda Airport to the south both a short drive away.

“I don’t see it as something the city would want anyway,” he said.
