Deadline to register for hurricane relief is Jan. 7

VENICE — There are only a few days left to register for Federal Emergency Management Agency or Small Business Administration assistance if you suffered losses from hurricanes Debby, Helene or Milton.

The deadline to get into the federal system to qualify for relief is Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Though no more new registrations will be accepted after that date, administration of claims will continue, Media Representative Troy York said.

Through Dec. 30, FEMA had approved $1.22 billion in individual and $1.51 billion in public assistance in Florida, including $360 million for debris removal, according to an agency fact sheet.

Nearly 19,800 people in the state have received assistance with transitional housing, it shows.

Peter Fraenkel, manager of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Disaster Recovery Center at the Venice Community Center, said housing remains the biggest problem facing hurricane victims.

The registration window for assistance has been open for months, but “people always come in at the last minute,” he said.
