After nearly five decades of operation, The Meadows Country Club in Sarasota, Fla., has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, signaling the end of an era for one of the region’s most storied private clubs. The filing, submitted on July 7 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Florida, lists between $1 million and $10 million in assets and liabilities.
In a Chapter 7 case, nonexempt assets are liquidated to repay creditors. As of July 14, only the pool, Racquet Club, and fitness center remained open. The golf courses and restaurant have been shut down.
