Verdict: Sarasota jury finds mother guilty of manslaughter for 14-week-old infant’s death

After about five hours of deliberating on Aug. 15, a six person jury found that Sarasota mother Lily Scheip is guilty of manslaughter in the death of her 14-week-old son, Dominic.

Scheip, 34, was arrested in March 2022, a little more than four months after she found her baby unresponsive and not breathing in his bassinet on the night of Nov. 8, 2021. The Sarasota mother had been alone at home with her two sons, both under 2 years of age, after her husband left for band practice a couple hours before the incident.

Scheip was initially charged and on trial for murder in the second degree. The verdict, guilty of manslaughter, was that of a lesser included crime. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled at a later date. The maximum possible sentence Scheip could receive is 15 years…
